The “autonomous SOC” hype cycle is in full swing. If you’ve read almost any cybersecurity publication from the past eighteen months, you’ve been bombarded with messaging around AI-powered SecOps.
ReliaQuest promotes “the agentic AI security operations platform.” Deepwatch launched what it calls “the MDR industry’s first collaborative agentic AI ecosystem.” Both examples reflect the broadened push toward agentic AI for SecOps. BlueVoyant positions itself around “AI-driven managed cyber defense,” part of a wider category of AI-driven SecOps platforms.
Dropzone AI claims to be “the world’s first AI SOC analyst.” AirMDR emphasizes its “AI analyst that autonomously triages 100% of alerts.” Tenex deploys “swarms of intelligent agents” as “the 10X AI SOC leader.”
Read those carefully. Can you tell how each vendor is different? Neither can anyone else.
When every vendor describes their capability using identical language, the terminology stops communicating anything meaningful. Phrases like “AI-powered SecOps,” “intelligent automation,” “agentic workflows,” and “agentic AI for SecOps” appear so frequently and uniformly across vendor materials that they mean everything and nothing at the same time. For security leaders evaluating these solutions, the words have become useless as differentiators.
If you’ve spent any time on the floor at Black Hat or RSAC, you’ve watched this play out. Transformative innovations get drowned in noise as every vendor scrambles to claim the latest buzzword. The hype spikes, the term loses all meaning, and the market moves on to the next one.
This pattern has a name: semantic diffusion.
Martin Fowler coined the term in 2006 to describe what happens when “a word that is coined by a person or group, often with a pretty good definition, but then gets spread through the wider community in a way that weakens that definition.”
It’s become standard practice in the cybersecurity industry, and it’s happening right now with “agentic AI,” “AI-powered,” and “autonomous SOC.”
The result isn’t just linguistic confusion. It breeds justified cynicism among security leaders who have watched and been burned by this cycle as it repeats with each new wave.
When every vendor claims the latest capability, the reasonable response is skepticism toward all claims. That skepticism is well-earned, but it creates an unfortunate side effect: it buries genuine innovation when it appears.
The definitions vary wildly. Some vendors call any system that uses multiple AI models “agentic.” Others include systems combining traditional automation with LLM-generated text. Still others reserve the term for systems demonstrating goal-directed behavior with minimal human intervention.
In computer science, an agent is software that perceives its environment, makes decisions, and takes action to achieve specified goals. Agentic systems employ multiple agents working in coordination.
When vendors describe their platforms as “agentic,” the critical question is: are we discussing true multi-agent architectures with specialized roles and coordinated workflows, or a chatbot interface connected to a SIEM that generates natural language summaries of alerts?
This ambiguity produces predictable questions from security leaders: “Is this just another chatbot?” “Are you just feeding my alerts to ChatGPT?” “What happens when it hallucinates?” “How do you validate results and control for bias?”
These questions reflect valid concerns. The people asking them have spent their careers building and operating SecOps teams. They understand the complexity involved. When a vendor claims that AI solves problems that have challenged the industry for decades, the natural response is to doubt.
That doubt intensifies when examining claims about autonomous SecOps. 7AI declares we’ve reached “an agentic security inflection point that changes the equation entirely.”
I’ve seen claims for the first autonomous self-learning AI agent for SecOps, autonomous investigations of every SOC alert, and more. Meanwhile, Gartner published research in 2024 titled “Predict 2025: There Will Never Be an Autonomous SOC.”
Consider what full autonomy actually implies. Organizations already struggling to manage SIEM complexity, SOAR workflow brittleness, and EDR alert volume now face a proposal to add another layer: an AI system that itself requires expertise to operate, tune, and maintain.
AI doesn’t eliminate complexity. It transforms it. Instead of managing SIEM queries and SOAR playbooks, security teams would now manage prompt engineering, agent workflows, and AI output validation.
For organizations that lack the expertise to handle their current security stack, HackTheBox claims adding AI creates a complexity transfer problem rather than a complexity reduction solution. You haven’t simplified anything. You’ve just moved the hard parts somewhere new and potentially somewhere your team is even less equipped to deal with.
This doesn’t mean AI can’t transform SecOps. It clearly can. The transformation requires acknowledging what AI actually provides: powerful augmentation of human expertise, not replacement of it. AI excels at processing volume, identifying patterns, and handling repetitive tasks. It struggles with judgment, novel context, and edge cases that lack clear precedent. SecOps demands both.
The gap between impressive demos and reliable production deployment is where the real engineering lives. Demos showcase AI capabilities under controlled conditions with clean, well-formatted sample data. Production systems must handle the messy reality of enterprise security data at scale, under pressure, with zero tolerance for failure.
The vendors making it sound easy are the ones who should concern you most. Building agentic SecOps systems that actually work in production requires solving at least three engineering challenges that rarely appear in vendor marketing.
These problems share a revealing characteristic: they don’t manifest in demonstrations or proof-of-concept deployments. They emerge at scale, under production conditions, with real client data. They require engineering investment that isn’t visible in a slide deck.
When evaluating vendors, the question isn’t whether they use AI. Everyone uses AI. The question is whether they’re confronting these hard problems honestly or pretending they don’t exist.
Ask them the following:
Vendors who have solved these problems will talk about them in detail, because the solutions represent genuine competitive differentiation. Vendors who haven’t will redirect to feature lists, speed metrics, and polished demos with curated data.
